Should Sugary Products Be Taxed to Encourage Healthier Eating Habits?

Many manufactured food and drink products contain high levels of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar.

It is undeniable that packaged edibles consist of disproportionate quantities of sweeteners which can be severely detrimental to one’s health. Owing to this, some experts recommend making such items costlier as that can discourage people from consuming less sugar. However, I agree with this statement only to some extent.

Starting off, an increase in the price of sugary products can impact their consumption by potentially decreasing demand. The higher cost could render these items out of reach for certain individuals, causing them to reconsider their purchase and ultimately consume less.

Nonetheless, raising the price of sugary food items may not influence a majority of the population to cut down their sugar consumption. Whether people will purchase less or not will depend on the proportion of the increase. A nominal increase might not reduce demand as some people can still afford. Likewise, some addicts of sugar will continue to buy even costlier edibles. Hence, there might be no change in the buying behavior of consumers.

In addition to the above, an increase in price will make even some daily essentials expensive because even bread comes under sugary items. Thereby, rather than positive, this will affect some people badly and lead to hunger, especially the lower-income group. By the same token, alone price hike cannot bring change, generating awareness is the need of the hour to make some tangible difference.

To sum up, regular consumption of a high proportion of sugar can take a toll on the body, making it prone to several diseases. Therefore, consumers need to make the right decisions, despite the price levels.
